Abed Nassir – a creative, highly motivated student from the Arab city of Tira – has always been drawn to multifaceted problems for which no obvious solutions exist.
His passion for problem solving initially drove him to pursue an advanced degree at Tel Aviv University, where he began to search for a nonintrusive way to diagnose sleeping disorders. Currently, sleeping disorders are detected using uncomfortable wired sensors that affect the patients’ quality of sleep and, consequently, the efficacy of the test.
Abed soon came up with a solution. Under the supervision of Prof. Ofer Barnea, Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, he designed a wireless system using Bluetooth technologies that accurately identifies and monitors respiratory abnormalities during sleep. His invention could potentially help millions suffering from sleep disorders to receive better care.
In addition to his research, which is supported by a Lois and Martin Whitman Scholarship, Abed works as a teaching assistant at the Iby and Aladar Fleischman Faculty of Engineering and builds websites. Abed plans to pursue a PhD degree in the coming years and to eventually start a career in high-tech.
