Tel Aviv University International Come and join us on January 27th for our monthly Tel Aviv University Talk, which will be devoted to International Holocaust Remembrance Day. In this talk, we will explore some of the many works of art created in the camps and ghettos and in hiding. Examining many different kinds of visual artifacts –paintings and drawings as well as a graphic novel, cartoons, and even stamps and graffiti – we will learn how each work is a material witness that can help us face the effaced and remember the dismembered. Tel Aviv University International Revisiting the Past By Hillary Levey Have you ever wonder what it was like to travel back in time? For these six men, visiting Tel Aviv University, felt just like that. Yotty, Matias, David, Daniel, Barak, and Chris come from Sweden, South Korea, Canada, and the US. After nearly 25 years, they met up once again to take on the greatest adventure, for a second time, which was going a three-day hike. In case you do not believe that they have gone through the same hike in 1994, they brought their yearbook as proof! After training for the past twenty-five years, the men felt prepared enough to take on this hike again. Although they did not do the exact three-day hike, this was the event that brought them back together. Isn’t it amazing that one little event, a seemingly small, but quite powerful memory can propel decisions on where to go, and why, in the future? Upon arriving at the University campus, the question that resonated most was where to begin reminiscing. Classes had, in a sense, just been classes to them, which consisted of the the usual course work; such as, philosophy, chemistry, a language course, etc. They were excited to see much more after all these years. Throwing the new logoed TAU t-shirts on after showing off their original OSP (Over Seas Student Program) t-shirts, it was time to head to the dorms where they once lived. The Einstein Dormitory was where all six of them lived, and spent many of their free hours. With that being said, it was only natural to see what was still around, and what had been lost over the years. The astounded expressions surpassed each of their faces, as they discovered that their memories of the dancing in the club under Building G, the Falafel and Shawarma Café under Building E, the public telephones, and attending classes in the dorms were just memories. However, it was special to see that the trees, the firehouse outside of building G, the exterior design of the buildings, and the layout of the flats are all still the same. To re-create a memory that had lasted for the past twenty-five years, these six friends came back to Israel, to the place where their friendship had begun. This is truly an inspiration to all. It can be difficult to remain in contact with people over the years, but these guys stayed in touch, and held on tightly to the memories created during their once in a lifetime experience; studying abroad at Tel Aviv University. We hope to see our other alumni coming back and recreate their favorite memories soon as well!
