Prof. Shimshon Bar-Ad Conducts experimental research in several sub-fields of modern optics, including nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and ultrafast laser spectroscopy. At present, the research in nonlinear optics focuses on the fluid-like propagation of light in self-defocusing nonlinear Kerr media, and the possibility of using this hydrodynamic analogy to create an all-optical analogue event horizon and demonstrate analogue Hawking radiation. The research in quantum optics involves weak measurements that demonstrate "which path" paradoxes in nested interferometers. The optically induced insulator-metal phase transition in vanadium dioxide was also recently studied.
