Alan L. Aufzien (1931-2020)

TAU Honorary Doctor remembered for his philanthropy and support of Israel and Jewish causes
29 June 2020

American Friends of Tel Aviv University (AFTAU) mourns the passing of Alan L. Aufzien, of blessed memory, a member of Tel Aviv University’s (TAU) International Board of Governors and former chairman of AFTAU. Alan and his wife, Norma, have supported many communal, Jewish and Israeli causes including the World Presidents' Organization, Passaic Beth Israel Hospital, the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and NJ Seeds.

Alan became a devoted member of the TAU family more than thirty years ago. The Aufzien family has given generously to student fellowships, cancer research, Middle Eastern studies and the Maurice and Gabriela Goldshleger School of Dental Medicine.

As chairman of AFTAU, Alan engaged new philanthropists and expanded its relationships across the US, deepening its ties with the University. Last year, he and his family established the Aufzien Family Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease to advance research in Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases in laboratories on campus and at affiliated hospitals, supporting scientists and clinicians working towards the development of novel drugs, therapies and diagnostic technologies. For his generosity of heart and spirit, in 2004 Alan was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tel Aviv University.

The AFTAU Board of Directors and staff send their heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife Norma; his daughter Leslie Levine (Peter) and their daughter Rachel; daughter Merry Bauer (Gil) and their children Andrew, Jen and Rebecca; son Jonathan (Michelle) and their children Jacob, Elizabeth and Susan; and daughter Lisa (Don).
