Prof. Michal Itzhaki

 

Prof. Michal Itzhaki (Ben-Amotz), Department of Nursing, School of Health Professions, serves as the head of the MA program at the Nursing Department. She served as the chair of the Nursing Department from 2018 until 2022. She completed her nursing degree at Tel Aviv University. She is the first registered nurse in Israel to have completed a direct PhD track, which she obtained at Tel Aviv University. She completed her post-doctoral training at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Bar Ilan University. 

Prof. Itzhaki explores the feelings experienced by healthcare workers and patients and their coping strategies with differences between expected versus experienced emotions in life-threatening situations (emergency and disaster) and complex care situations. Investigation of the emotion management experienced by nurses includes attention to caring, emotional resilience, and staff resilience. Her research forms the basis for developing intervention programs aimed at efficient, emotional labor, which includes raising the caregiver/patient's sense of resilience and emotional support. She uses a mixed methods design that combines qualitative and quantitative methods

 

Emotional Management, Cultural Competence and Resilience

My research focuses on emotions and  emotional management of patients and caregivers in complex care situations. I explore the feelings experienced by healthcare workers and patients and how they cope with differences between expected emotions and experienced emotions in life-threatening situations (emergency and disaster) and in the treatment of mental patients and terminal illnesses. Investigation of the emotions experienced by nurses and how they cope with these emotions includes attention to caring and emotional resilience. My research findings form the basis for developing intervention programs aimed at efficient emotional management, which includes both positive and negative emotions as well as raising the caregiver/patient's sense of resilience and emotional support. Moreover, I examine the perceptions and knowledge of caregivers and patients concerning chronic illness, end of life, and the effects of treatment on the caregiver, patient, and family members. I use a mixed methods design that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods.
