This week, when Tel Aviv University's Faculty of Engineering celebrated its newest graduates, one student took the stage after a journey unlike any other.

Alon Kaminer, a reserve soldier in the Israeli Navy's Snapir unit, was critically wounded during the Iron Swords War. He underwent a lengthy rehabilitation process in Israel and the United States, all while continuing his studies. This week, he graduated with honors in Industrial Engineering and Management.

On Wednesday, June 10, the Faculty of Engineering awarded degrees to hundreds of graduates. Among them was Kaminer, whose story reflects extraordinary determination in the face of life-changing circumstances.

Learning Through Intensive Care

Kaminer describes the remarkable journey he has taken since his injury:

"Immediately after I was wounded, and very consciously, I made a decision that no matter what happened, I would keep moving forward and never stop, even though I didn't fully understand what that would mean."

"I remember a friend telling me in the hospital that my studies had been canceled so I wouldn't have to keep paying tuition. At that point, I could barely move, but I told him there was no way I would agree to that and asked him to have the cancellation reversed immediately, and that's exactly what happened. In fact, after my injury I never stopped studying for a single moment. I studied while in intensive care and later in the United States during my rehabilitation and prosthetic fitting process."

The university also did everything possible to support Kaminer. Immediately after his injury, faculty members in the Faculty of Engineering mobilized to help him continue and complete his studies through remote learning during medical treatments, individualized academic support, and full accessibility accommodations in laboratory courses, ensuring that his disability would not become an obstacle.

A Source of Inspiration

Prof. Noam Eliaz, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, says:

"Alon's story of courage is deeply moving. He is a source of inspiration to all of us, a person who chose hope over despair. "

"The fact that he is completing his degree in Industrial Engineering and Management, and doing so with honors, is a testament to his extraordinary spirit, determination, and strength of will."

Prof. Dan Yamin, Head of the Industrial Engineering and Management Program at Tel Aviv University, who accompanied Kaminer throughout his studies, adds:

"Even before his injury, Alon was an outstanding student. He always wanted to get the most out of every opportunity, never miss a thing, and gain every possible piece of knowledge. After his severe injury, I realized that this was not merely a characteristic, it was a way of life. He possesses an uncompromising inner drive to achieve, to act, and to overcome every circumstance life puts in his path.

There is no doubt that Alon's story reflects the story of an extraordinary generation of soldiers. Since becoming head of the program, I have encountered many students facing unimaginable challenges throughout their degrees: hundreds of days of reserve duty, injuries and rehabilitation, emotional struggles, and financial hardship, all while pursuing one of the most demanding academic paths in the Faculty of Engineering. These cohorts are accomplishing the unimaginable. All of us, faculty members, instructors, and staff, stand in awe of their abilities and are immensely proud of them."

"Nothing Can Stand in the Way of Determination"

Kaminer concludes:

"I proved to myself, and I hope to others as well, that nothing can stand in the way of determination. A will as strong as steel, combined with a flexible mind that adapts to change. I owe enormous thanks to the School of Industrial Engineering and Intelligent Systems at Tel Aviv University, to all the lecturers and administrative staff. Without you, I would not have succeeded. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. Thank you for believing in me and supporting me.

I also want to acknowledge other wounded soldiers, my fellow reservists, and the families who lost everything in this war. Never stop believing, even for a moment. And yes—if you want it badly enough, the sky is the limit."

More than 1,500 people rose to their feet in Smolarz Auditorium as Kaminer received his degree. To the sound of I Will Survive, he celebrated the moment with a dance that brought the audience to tears and applause.
