President of New Kazakhstan Friends Association Named
During a major economic forum in Astana, Kazakhstan, Chairman of the Tel Aviv University Board of Governors Prof. Jacob A. Frenkel presented a certificate of membership to the Board of TAU to Dr. Alexander Machkevitch, a leading prominent businessman, in the presence of Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel and Ambassador of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, Pierre Ferring. During the ceremony it was announced that Dr. Machkevitch will serve as the founding president of TAU’s new Friends Association in Kazakhstan.
Prof. Frenkel was among the speakers at the opening plenary of the Astana conference, along with President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, who currently serves as President of the Council of the European Union.
Today there are some 30,000 Jews in Kazakhastan. Dr. Machkevitch is active in the Jewish community and served as president of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) until 2011.
