For over thirty years I have been involved in all aspects of geriatric medicine in Israel as department head at Shmuel Harofeh Hospital (1986-2012) and as Chief Geriatrician at "Meuchedet" health maintenance organization (2012- present) This period coincides with the development of modern geriatric medicine in Israel at all its aspects: service, research and education.
This is reflected in over a hundred publications of mine in the fields of clinical practice, geriatric medical education, as well as research and teaching at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine in Tel Aviv University (where I was until a year ago the coordinator of geriatric education at the Department of Internal Medicine - since the introduction of the subject in the early nineties). I serve as an active member of the National Council of Geriatrics and I headed several committees for the Ministry of Health and the Israeli Geriatric Association, all have contributed to improve the quality of the medical services for the elderly in Israel.
In the last three years, as part of my position as director of geriatrics in HMO "Meuchedet" I led a number of initiatives to formulate and strengthen the community geriatric service in Israel. Our scope is to translate the knowledge acquired in the last decades in the field of geriatrics research into programs of prevention and health promotion with an emphasis on maintaining the quality of life. Recently, as part of these efforts, I'm developing with a group from the Department of Science Education at the Weizmann Institute, a medical literacy program in Israel which is also a part of the great effort to promote health for all.
