U.S. Congress cites TAU report

The Kantor Center's report on antisemitism is the basis of a proposal by a bi-partisan task force

Tel Aviv University's Kantor Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry, inaugurated in May 2010, provides an academic framework for the interdisciplinary research of European Jewry from the end of World War II until the present day.  It offers a platform for the diverse needs of researchers, students, governmental and civil service personnel, professionals, activists, and the public at large, both in Israel and abroad, and cooperates with European Jewish communities and their leaders.

Each year, the Kantor Center compiles a report on the general state of antisemitism worldwide. The report for the year 2017 found an increase in the brutality of attacks towards Jews in Europe, stating that "Jews living in Europe harbor increasingly grave concerns for their security".

On April 26th, 2018, members of the United States Congress released a press statement referencing the report specifically. The heads of the Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Anti-Semitism said in their statement:

"We are gravely concerned by the staggering increase in anti-Semitism across Europe as documented in the recent report by the Kantor Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry at Tel Aviv University. It is inexcusable that Jews in Europe are living in fear of violence, harassment, and abuse in 2018 for no reason other than their faith. When widespread anti-Semitism goes unchecked in Europe, the results are heinous, sometimes even deadly, and we must redouble our efforts to reverse the trend of such bigotry."

The members of the taskforce went on to urge Congress to act and allocate resources to the fight against antisemitism in Europe. "Additionally, attacks on and threats to Jewish communities globally are why it is urgent for the Administration to immediately appoint a Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism," they said in the statement.

TAU is proud to see the impact of the work being done by the Kantor Center and tools the report has provided to lawmakers worldwide to push for policy to combat antisemitism.
