Tel Aviv University Prize in Physics - The Recipients
Tel Aviv University Prize International Prize in Physics was established through the generosity of Dr. Raymond and Mrs. Beverly Sackler. It is awarded once every two years to young scientists with the aim of promoting originality and excellence in physics research
This year's Raymond and Beverly Sackler International Prize in Physics was awarded to researchers within the disciplines Emergent Phenomena and Functionality in Metamaterials and Heterostructures.
The prize is intended to encourage dedication to science, originality, and excellence. It is rewarded to selected outstanding young scientists below 40 years, who already at this early stage in their carreer have made a unique and groundbreaking contribution and are among the world leaders in their field of research.
The 2020 Prize Recipients of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler International Prize in Physics
The Selection Committee of the 2020 Sackler Prize in the physical sciences has decided to award the 2020 Sackler Prize in the field of "Emergent Phenomena and Functionality in Metamaterials and Heterostructures" to Dr. Yuan Cao from Harvard University, USA; to Prof. Ronny Thomale from the Julius-Maximilians Universitat in Wurzburg, Germany and to Prof. Yiwen Chu from ETH-Zurich, Switzerland for their outstanding contribution to the discipline.
Dr. Yuan Cao
Harvard University in Cambridge Massachusetts, USA
The prize was awarded to Dr. Yuan Cao for the discovery of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene.
Prof. Ronny Thomale
Julius-Maximilians-Universitat in Wurzburg, Germany
The prize was awarded to Prof. Ronny Thomale for introducing topological electric circuit networks as a platform for the synthetic matter.
Prof. Yiwen Chu
ETH - Zurich, Switzerland
The prize was awarded to Prof. Yiwen Chu for introducing a new class of devices and hybrid structures enabling quantum information processing
The award has been given since 2000. Laureates from previous years include senior scientists around the world who won the prize in early stages of their careers, including 2011 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Prof. Adam G. Riess, who won the Sackler Prize in 2004.
The awards ceremony and lectures by the prize recipients were held on Tuesday November 23, 2021 via Zoom. Watch here >>.
The coordinators of the 2020 Sackler Prize are Prof. Yoram Dagan and Prof. Roni Ilan from Tel Aviv University's School of Physics and Astronomy.
