Battling Cancer from All Directions
Cancer is the leading cause of death in the world. One of the reasons it is so hard for medical doctors and researchers to combat the disease is because it actually refers to 150 different conditions. That being said, recent biomedical research has made remarkable progress toward prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer.
Tel Aviv University is a forerunner in discovering the mechanisms behind cancer and developing technological applications that are changing the fate of cancer patients. With more than 600 University researchers and 17 affiliated hospitals, TAU’s Integrative Cancer Research Center is the largest cancer center in Israel. Bringing together researchers in biology, engineering, physics, psychology and bioinformatics, it holds 330 cancer-related patents and is the driving force behind the wave of cancer treatments and therapies that Israel has produced. Several of the Center’s recent breakthroughs have made headlines. For example, a team led by Dr. Carmit Levy discovered chemical substances that could block melanoma from metastasizing.
This and other advances are only the start. An influx of funding will enable the Center to acquire equipment and recruit more researchers to bolster its game-changing research.
