Founded in 1980, the Austrian Friends of Tel Aviv University has grown to a membership of over 300. The association has established various projects at TAU in the fields of cancer research and medicine, music, physiology, biotechnology, astronomy and physics, as well as support for student fellowships. An Austrian-sponsored project in the sphere of human rights, "Fighting Hunger," was distinguished with the Bruno Kreisky Award for Merit.

The Austrian Friends promote joint projects, lectures and publications with TAU. The association places emphasis on scientific exchange between the two countries, realized through many long-standing collaborations between   Austrian Universities and TAU. These strong ties are symbolized through TAU's number 1 gate, aptly named the "Austria Gate." A significant milestone in this relationship was realized through the signing of a collaboration agreement with the Austrian Federal Minister of Science and Research Prof. Dr. Karlheinz Töchterle in 2011. Other cooperation agreements with TAU include with the Medical University of Vienna.
