American Friends of Tel Aviv University
TAU’s American Friends are a cosmopolitan, congenial, and intellectually sophisticated group with a real commitment to Israel's leading institution for higher learning. Founded in 1955, one year before the official dedication of Tel Aviv University, its members share a common vision — to nurture higher education, develop Israel's best minds, and help “expand the future” for people around the world.
American Friends enjoy a stimulating variety of social, cultural and educational activities in cities across the USA throughout the year, many offering uncommon access. These include one-of-a-kind international trips with entree to academic, business and government leaders, and special local programs and presentations.
The American Friends website offers breaking news from TAU researchers and faculty superstars, and full coverage of AFTAU news and events.
National Chairman: Jon Gurkoff
TAU Governor Jon Gurkoff assumed the leadership of AFTAU in 2011, having previously served as Treasurer. The CEO of Ada Products Company Inc., he and his wife Stevi are New Jersey residents.
Jon has been active in American Jewish communal organizations for many decades, including serving as President of the Jewish Federation of Greater Clifton/Passaic, NJ; Vice Chairman of the Board of Beth Israel Hospital in Passaic, NJ; member of the Young Leadership Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal; and on the Board of the Daughters of Miriam Center for the Aged, Clifton, NJ.
In Jon’s view, all of Israel’s institutions of higher education are important for the wellbeing of the State of Israel, and all deserve support. However, because Tel Aviv University is currently underrepresented in the United States relative to its importance to Israel, his goal is to make TAU’s strength and stature widely known.
As Chairman, he is committed to increasing TAU’s visibility by “bringing the university to America,” and by bringing new American friends to the campus to discover its world-class research and scholarship. He leads an increasingly active and expanding Board of Directors. Jon is an ardent believer in the TAU International program, viewing it as an ideal vehicle to strengthen the bonds between young American Jews and Israel — an important factor in creating life-long connections that will enrich and fortify the Diaspora.
