Meet Tamir

Tamir

Age: 27
Rank: Master Sergeant
Military role: Sharpshooter in the 98 Paratrooper Division, stationed in Gaza
Studies: Biology
Calling: Oncologist/Cancer Researcher

Tamir, who is from Tel Aviv, wanted to be an oncologist since he was a child. He remembers accompanying his grandfather on chemo treatments and thinking to himself how strange it was that we can send spaceships to Mars, but we still can’t beat cancer. “That’s when I thought that I wanted to help change that.”

Now Tamir is in his second year of biology studies at TAU, but when duty called he left everything and joined his army unit. He says fighting in the reserves in the October 7th war was a life changing experience. “It’s frightening. You have no way of making yourself safe, you just do what you know how to do automatically.”

Tamir missed the first month of classes of the 1st semester, and coming back has been rough. “Having a big goal helps in adjusting back to civilian life, it keeps me motivated, but the adjustment is still tough,” he says. Yet with the University’s help in one-on-one tutoring, after-hours small group studies and other tools Tamir hopes to stay on track and accomplish his dream.
