Meet Adi

Age: 25
Rank: 1st Sergeant
Military role: Paramedic in the Givati Brigade
Studies: Medicine
Calling: Doctor

Adi is a second-year medical student and, like all medical students in Israel, she has a waiver from reserve duty. However, just like most Israeli medical students, Adi couldn’t stand by, while her friends and colleagues fought on the frontlines and volunteered to serve right away. She served as a paramedic in the Givati Brigade, providing first-aid treatment for her team right in the middle of fighting in Gaza. Adi was on the call of duty for 85 days.

“Two of my friends were wounded during that time, and it was meaningful to me that I was able to help them until they were evacuated to hospitals in Israel,” she says.

Adi always wanted to be a doctor, but she’s keeping her options open in terms of choosing a specific role in the medical field.

“Returning to normal life has been really difficult,” she says. “One week you’re in Khan Younis, and the next week you’re in the classroom – it’s hard to find the inner quiet and concentration to sit still and do the work.”
Adi says the help from the University played a major role in easing the burden of her financial and academic worries. “More time for studies and exams, and the paid tuition— are all very important and a great help.”
