In a lively ceremony at the Raya and Josef Jaglom Auditorium during the 2017 Board of Governors Meeting, the first Annual Boris Mints Institute Prize for Research in Strategic Policy Solutions to Global Challenges was inaugurated. The $100,000 prize recognizes an exceptional individual whose research, public action and ideas have had a transformative impact on global policy formation. The prize is awarded in the Institute's fields of activity.

The first prize was awarded to Prof. Jeffrey D. Sachs of Columbia University. The Director of Sustainable Development Solutions Network, he is a world-renowned scholar of economics, leader in sustainable development, senior UN advisor, bestselling author, and syndicated columnist whose monthly newspaper columns appear in more than 80 countries. For more than thirty years Prof. Sachs has advised dozens of heads of state and governments on economic strategy in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Addressing the gathering, TAU President Joseph Klafter said, “This prize reinforces Tel Aviv University’s commitment to improving public policy and expands and deepens the University and Israel’s contribution to the world.” He described Dr. Mints as a “very modern philanthropist and a dream partner. He is personally involved in every aspect of the Mints Institute’s activities, attending all the conferences, inviting top speakers and generously hosting the participants.” Under Dr. Mints’s sponsorship, noted Prof. Klafter, “the Institute has had an extraordinary output in its first year of operations, including hosting three international conferences, in Finland, Malta and here in Israel.”

Head of the Boris Mints Institute Prof. Itai Sened, said: “Two years ago Boris Mints came to me suggesting we do something about global challenges. Since then we have created an institute that provides impactful strategies and solutions. We have brought a group of renowned professors and public figures to sit on the Institute’s International Board of Directors.”

At a separate event, Prof. Sachs gave a lecture on “Israel and Sustainable Development.”
