Professor Yoav Henis has been appointed Vice President for Research and Development at Tel Aviv University (TAU). Prof. Henis is an international leader in the field of cancer biophysics. His studies, which have been published in leading scientific journals, combine cell biology and membrane biophysics to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying the activity of membrane proteins associated with cancer.

Prof. Henis began his academic career at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he completed his doctoral research in 1978 summa cum laude. Subsequently he pursued post-doctoral research in the United States. Upon his return to Israel, he was appointed a faculty member at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Biochemistry, and later at the Department of Neurobiology, both of which are part of the George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences. In addition, Prof. Henis has held visiting professorships at MIT, UC Berkeley and Duke University.

Prof. Henis has served as chair of the undergraduate admissions committee at the TAU George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences, as secretary of the Israeli Association for Cell Biology, as chair of the Department of Neurobiochemistry (today Neurobiology), and as a member of various national and university committees. He is also active in several scientific associations in Israel and the US, and is the recipient of numerous awards and prizes.

The office of the Vice President for Research and Development is in charge of advancing the research and development activities at the university, and of making the knowledge accumulated at the university accessible to the broader scientific community. Among the challenges facing the office today: advancing research at Tel Aviv University; broadening the University’s research enterprise; and opening up new channels of research.
